Lightspeed Champion @ The Black Cat

Tomorrow night, alt. country/indie act Lightspeed Champion will be gracing the stage of The Black Cat. They are the second of three acts; doors are at 8PM.

Lightspeed Champion recorded their debut album at Saddle Creek with a couple members of indie darlings Bright Eyes, so be ready for a bit of twang with the British rhetoric that Lightspeed Champion brings lyrically.

You can check out a video of his first single, Galaxy of the Lost, below.

Review of the new Weezer? How about My Morning Jacket? The Ting Tings? Are they too mainstream for you to review? Or is it just because they don't have Anthony Green as a member or friend of the band?

I haven't reviewed those bands because I really don't like their music. Which may or my not be a result of them being too mainstream.

But since you asked, I'll tell you what I think of those three bands.

Weezer: I've seen these guys live once and they were great. Not because of the songs they played, but because they were really entertaining. I always felt Weezer was a band that is really "cool" to be into, and I guess I missed the bus. Maybe it's the Rivers Cuomo going Harvard thing gives people an intelligent or artsy vibe. I'm not sure to be honest. I have nothing against the band, I'm just not into them. Their new record is a bit repetitive if you ask me (based on the Make Believe album).

My Morning Jacket: They incorporate a lot of southern, country-ish rock into their sound, which definitely isn't my thing. In listening to their new album, here is how I feel about some of the tracks:

Evil Urges - the beginning sounds kind of like Modest Mouse (who I love), but then it changes direction with some weird vocal melodies and musical progressions.

Touch Me I'm Going to Scream - this is a great song. It sounds similar to Pinback.

Highly Suspicious - again with the weird vocal melodies. I just couldn't get into it.

Thank You Too - this is a pretty good slow song. Pretty generic.

So I guess I don't like all of their music, just most of it. It's obvious that these guys are super talented though.

The Ting Tings: This band doesn't have one redeeming quality. They are a buzz band in America because of the song that Apple used. They are huge in the UK because (1) they're from there and (2) the Brits love some weird music. Not my thing.

Also, Anthony Green rules.

I feel like I didn't support my last comment about The Ting Tings very well. Two more reasons:

1. It is silly for one song to make a band famous. It encapsulates everything that is wrong with the music industry.

2. Their other songs (besides the Apple song) contain basic, boring music arrangements and the vocals lack melody and creativity.
